Lagos, Nigeria, May 14, 2015: Coca-Cola Nigeria Limited and the United Kingdom Department for International Development Girls Education have launched the the Educating Nigerian Girls in Nigeria Enterprise (ENGINE) Value Program which is aimed at strengthening the educational and economic opportunities of the Nigerian girl-child.
Speaking on the initiative which was launched simultaneously in Lagos, Kaduna, Abuja and Kano on Wednesday, May 13, 2015, the Program Manager, ENGINE, Ayodele Fajemilola, said that the Lagos initiative would benefit over 6000 girls.
Fajemilola added that, ‘’A vocational training program will be implemented in five Local Government Areas , namely Kosofe, Ojo, Bariga, Alimosho and Epe and about 6,357 girls will benefit from the program, which is aimed at empowering them educationally and economically.’’
Shedding light on the training modules, she stated that, “The girls will be taught four basic courses, namely, business education, life skills, financial education and savings education.”
Commenting on the involvement of Coca-Cola Nigeria in the initiative, the Communications Manager, Coca-Cola Nigeria Limited, Sam Umukoro said the organisation believed that investment in women education and career would spur economic growth and also nurture sustainable development in the country.
“At Coca-Cola Nigeria, we support women empowerment and we are committed to assisting marginalized adolescent girls in the society by offering business skills, training courses, financial services and mentors to help them become micro- entrepreneurs. This objective derives from Coca-Cola’s conviction that educating females contributes to social and economic growth”.
He described the partnership as a demonstration of Coca-Cola’s belief that sustainable solutions to most society’s challenges lie in solid partnership among the civil society, private and public sectors.
The peak of the event was the presentation of branded materials like Umbrellas, Coolers and Log Books from Coca-Cola Nigeria to the participants in order to kick-start their businesses.
