The rise of Togolese Star Ozane
Ozane from Togo is a singer, songwriter and music producer known best for the hit track Trouble. Having started a career more than a decade ago, 2017 is proving to be one of Ozane’s best years so far. He just released his debut album “LUCKY” and he also makes his debut on Coke Studio Africa as a Big Break Artist paired alongside Patoranking (Nigeria) and Alikiba (Tanzania).
For the second time in a row, Coke Studio Africa is giving a chance to fast-rising, up-and-coming artists to feature on the show on the Big Break segment, where they collaborate with industry greats. Other Big Break artists this year include: Mashayabhuqe (South Africa), The Band BeCa (Kenya), Denise (Madagascar), Shellsy Baronet (Mozambique), Worlasi (Ghana), Ykee Benda (Uganda) and Dremo (Nigeria). Ozane said of his debut: “Being on Coke Studio Africa is good experience for me. I am quite happy and honored to be part (of it). As a Reggae and Dancehall artist and a great fan of Patoranking… it was good working with him, and Alikiba too who has good vibes!”
When Ozane was a child he would go to his mother’s cybercafé to play computer games. While there he discovered FL Studio and that led him to music. “I thought it was just a game but the more music you would make the more points you would get.” He only discovered it was a professional music production software when he visited a studio. He then started working with different artists as a producer, later setting up a recording studio with support from his family. He composes songs for himself and other Togolese musicians. Today Ozane is one of the few acts in his country, who doubles up as a record label executive, being the co-founder of Sound Paradise record label. Ozane says his genre - Ragga and Dancehall - is new in Togo and his compatriots are very proud of him because he is representing them at Coke Studio Africa 2017.
While recording his debut album a few months ago, Ozane’s hard drive crashed, making him lose the entire album just after he was done producing it. He had to start all over again. But the good news is, he managed to release his debut album and it is his best work of art yet, featuring his most diverse musical influences.
