Producer Speak: Meet GospelOnDeBeatz
We had superstar music producer GospelOnDeBeatz exclusively tell the Coke Studio Blog more about himself and his music career.
I go by the name of GospelOnDeBeatz but my government name is Gospel Chinemeremu Obi. I am a Nigerian music producer and songwriter known for producing hits such as No Kissing Baby by Patoranking and Sarkodie, among others. I started playing drums at the age of 7 and the keyboard at the age of 9. My love for playing the keyboard and making beats grew as I played and performed in my parent’s church and at different concerts around the community. My production skills and passion first gained recognition at the age of 17 when I produced a 10-track gospel choir album for my parent’s church.
I feel the world is just beginning to accept and recognize Africa’s sound. Back then we used to compromise and try to copy others but I think it is high time we got serious with our own sound and also be proud of it. I believe everything worth doing is worth doing well and if we make great music, the world will continue to look for our sound as they have begun doing so already. We are not where we want to be but we are not where we used to be either, so we have made improvements.
In as much as we have East, West or South African sound – it is all African music. We still have a sound and that sound is different from the western world. I believe that the future of music and sound is Afrobeat. I want to urge everyone no matter where they are from – Nigeria to Kenya – put in your best and most definitely the sky is our limit.
On the Coke Studio Africa project, I will work with Joey B and Amanda Black, among other music acts around Africa and it has been a great experience. I have been following Mi Casa for a long time now and I get to work with them in Coke Studio too. I cannot explain how exciting this is for me. Coke Studio Africa is the perfect positive vibe and I really enjoyed it.
